There are a few factors that influence how crystal clear your vision is – the shape of your eye, the structure of your cornea, and where light settles as it enters your eye. If any of these factors are slightly off, your vision will be blurry. Allow us to spotlight three eye conditions that LASEK can correct:

Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Do you have brilliant vision while reading a book but can’t read billboards or other objects that are far away? This may be due to a condition called nearsightedness – also known as myopia. When you are nearsighted, your distance vision is affected. It is not as clear as it should be because either your cornea is steeper than a normal eye or because your eye is a longer shape than usual. This forces the light that passes through your cornea to settle in front of your retina instead of directly on it. LASEK surgery can correct nearsightedness!

Farsightedness (Hyperopia)

Is your vision top-notch when you’re looking at something far away but it’s very blurry if you try to complete a task that requires close-up vision? This condition is called farsightedness – also known as hyperopia. When you are farsighted, your close-up vision is not as clear as it should be. Instead, images are blurry and distorted. This is due to your eye being shorter than normal or your cornea being flatter than usual. Unlike nearsightedness, light will make it to the cornea but will actually go too far. Light will settle behind the retina instead of on it. This causes images to become blurry. Yes, LASEK surgery can correct farsightedness, too!

Astigmatism

Did you know that you can have astigmatism combined with nearsightedness or farsightedness? Astigmatism occurs because your cornea’s shape is elongated instead of a full circle. Just like with nearsightedness and farsightedness, light is unable to focus evenly which results in eye strain, blurry vision, and difficulty performing daily tasks. Non-surgical treatment options like glasses or contacts may help, but for permanent, 24/7 relief, LASEK surgery can fix astigmatism.
