For Immediate Release:
Eyesight
Associates Treats Cataracts With FIRST and ONLY Lens
Implant
September 23, 2005
Approved by the FDA to Improve Functional
Vision in Older Adults
Warner Robins, Georgia, September 23, 2005—Dr.
Johnny L. Gayton, MD of Eyesight Associates recently
used the latest advanced intraocular lens technology
to help patients receiving cataract surgery here in
Middle Georgia. The TECNIS™ intraocular
lens (IOL) has been FDA-approved to improve functional
vision and contrast sensitivity. This may provide
a meaningful safety benefit for older drivers and for
those with whom they share the road and could also improve
safety for other life situations under low visibility
conditions.
Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural
lens of the eye (the cataract) and replacing it with
an artificial lens implant. It is the most common
surgical procedure in the world with 14 million procedures
performed each year. The TECNIS™ lens implant
was designed with a patented modified prolate surface
to correct lost vision from the cataract, and restore
the balance between the cornea of the eye and the new
artificial lens to provide vision more like that of
a 20-year-old person with a healthy cornea and healthy
natural lens. “The TECNIS™ lens implant
can provide many post-cataract surgery patients with
safer, sharper vision,” said Dr. Gayton. “For
my patients with cataracts, losing the ability to drive
or drive safely, especially at night, is of great concern.
Many people in their 60s or 70s are still very active
and want to drive, go out at night, or see clearly to
read or watch TV. The TECNIS™ lens provides a
quality of vision that can help them achieve those goals.”
Clinical studies have shown that a loss of functional
vision when driving in low light conditions can make
it more difficult to detect objects and road markings.
The TECNIS™ lens is the FIRST and ONLY IOL approved
by the FDA to improve functional vision.
1 Studies presented to the FDA reported
that, in a night driving simulator test, the TECNIS™
lens provided a 45-foot advantage in detection and identification
of a pedestrian hazard compared to a traditional lens
implant.
2 At 55 mph, this translates into an
additional half second to take evasive action, stop,
or lessen the effect of impact. By comparison, the third
rear brake light, now required by law on all automobiles,
provided only one-third of a second in additional braking
time.
3 A study by the Potomac Institute
used economic modeling to show that improved driving
performance, such as provided by the functional vision
improvement with the TECNIS™ lens, could translate
into substantial reduced costs in automobile accidents
that could reach millions of dollars per year.
The TECNIS™ Intraocular Lens is made by Advanced
Medical Optics (AMO), Inc. of Santa Ana, California.
AMO is a global medical device leader focused on the
discovery and delivery of innovative vision technologies
that optimize quality of life for people of all ages.

aphakia in adults in whom a cataractous lens has been
removed by phacoemulsification. The lenses are intended
to be placed in the capsular bag. Rx Only. Precautions:
Do not resterilize the lens; do not soak or rinse the
lens with any solution other than sterile saline solution;
do not store the lens in direct sunlight. Warnings:
Surgeons should consider the risk/benefit ratio for
adults with preoperative ocular pathology, including
but not limited to inflammation, distorted eye and microbial
infection. Adverse Events: Adverse events that have
been documented as having occurred following intraocular
lens implantation include, but are not limited to, corneal
edema, iritis, lens dislocation, hyphema, macular edema
and retinal detachment. For a complete listing of precautions,

Dr. Johnny
Gayton Lectures in Washington D.C.
May 2, 2005
Dr. Johnny Gayton, MD of Eyesight Associates
recently attended the American Society of Cataract and
Refractive Surgeons annual program in Washington D.C.
on April 15-17, 2005. Dr. Gayton normally takes a very
active role in this annual meeting; this year was not
an exception. He lectured on EconoPred® Plus, an
eye drop that is used to decrease inflammation following
eye surgery. Dr. Gayton also lectured on the Infiniti
Cataract Removal System and presented a video taped
at Eyesight Associates demonstrating the ease and efficiency
of setting up the Infiniti Cataract Removal System.
Eyesight Associates placed the first order in the world
for this groundbreaking technology. Since obtaining
the Infiniti System in August 2003, Dr. Gayton has used
this new technology to safely remove almost 2000 cataracts.
He lectured on the Infiniti’s many attributes,
which make cataract surgery much safer and more efficient
than ever before. He also participated in a course dealing
with using surface ablation (LASEK) to improve the results
in patients who are unsatisfied with their LASIK surgery.
Dr. Gayton’s contributions to
ASCRS were not only in the teaching arena; he was honored
to be selected as the moderator of two very important
sessions. The first session he was the moderator of
was Cataract Removal Techniques. This session dealt
with methods to improve the results of cataract surgery.
He was also chosen to be the moderator of the Multi-focal
Implant Program, the most exciting area of implant technology.
Multi-focal implants are a relatively new way of enabling
patients to have distance and near vision following
lensectomy or cataract surgery. Two implants have just
received FDA approval this year, the ReStor® IOL
and the Verisyse™ Phakic IOL, both implants are
available at Eyesight Associates.

Dr. Johnny
Gayton Lectures in Park City, Utah
February 14, 2005
Dr. Johnny Gayton of Eyesight Associates recently traveled
to Park City, Utah on January 20-22, 2005, to lecture
on the use of LASEK to enhance the results of other
refractive procedures. Performing a LASEK enhancement
after other refractive procedures has enabled many patients
disappointed with their LASIK and other refractive procedure
results to achieve better vision. LASEK is a method
of doing Laser Vision Correction without performing
a stromal flap. This results in a cornea that maintains
its structural integrity and fully heals. Dr. Gayton
is widely regarded as one of the nation’s leading
experts on LASEK having performed it for five years.
He has lectured on the benefits and technique of LASEK
in numerous states. These qualifications are why Dr.
Gayton was chosen to take part in an extensive debate
with fellow ophthalmologist, Dr. Doug Koch, while in
Park City. The two doctors debated the merits of LASEK
versus LASIK.
Dr. Gayton also presented a video taped
at Eyesight Associates demonstrating the ease and efficiency
of setting up the Infiniti Cataract Removal System.

Smoking Dramatically
Increases the Risk of Blinding Eye Disease
August 18, 2004
Warner Robins, Georgia, August
18, 2004 ñ Dr. Johnny L. Gayton, MD of Eyesight
Associates would like to help make the public aware
of the increasing rate of blindness due to smoking.
A recently published article in the Eurotimes: A European
Outlook on the World of Ophthalmology stated ìEye
specialists must make smokers aware that tobacco dramatically
increases the risk of blinding eye disease.î
The author of the article estimated that as many as
53,900 people in the UK may have visual impairment due
to smoking-related AMD (age-related macular degeneration).
Of these 53,900 people, 17,800 are blind from AMD attributed
to smoking. Currently smokers have three times an increased
risk of developing AMD than non-smokers do. Smokers
also develop AMD 10 years sooner than non-smokers.
One of the biggest problems
pertaining to the risk of smoking to the eye is public
ignorance. Most people do not know how many different
ways smoking can affect their eyes. AMD is irreversible;
therefore it is very important for health professionals
and the public to be aware of the correlation between
smoking and AMD. Smoking also contributes to blindness
by making other eye conditions such as glaucoma worse.
Health professionals are able to direct their patients
to the proper resources for smoking cessation.

RECENT
FDA APPROVAL ALLOWS EYESIGHT ASSOCIATES TO NOW OFFER
NEWEST LASEK TECHNOLOGY TO MORE THAN 90 PERCENT OF NEARSIGHTED
CANDIDATES
August 17, 2004
Warner Robins, GA, August 17, 2004 – The U.S.
Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a
treatment range expansion for the customized wavefront-guided
LASEK procedure, CustomCornea®. Performed with the
LADARVision® System, CustomCornea® is now approved
for the treatment of nearsightedness up to -8.0 diopters
(up from -7.0) and astigmatism up to -4.0 diopters (up
from -0.5).
This approval gives Eyesight Associates the broadest
wavefront-guided treatment range of any system in the
U.S., allowing the center the ability to treat more
than 90 percent of all nearsighted patients. With CustomCornea®,
physicians are able to measure and treat visual abnormalities
that have never been detected before, including those
linked to glare, halos and night vision problems. This
advanced treatment can provide patients with a better
quality of vision than they ever had before, even with
contacts or glasses.
“Since most vision correction patients suffer
from some combination of nearsighted and astigmatism,
we’re happy to now offer an even greater pool
of vision care patients the potential to improve their
quality of vision.,” says Dr. Johnny L. Gayton,
MD. “We’ve been performing custom laser
vision correction for 15 months now and have seen excellent
results like this. The majority of our patients are
thrilled with their outcomes; it’s often life-changing
for them.”
Further clinical trials are ongoing to demonstrate the
effectiveness of the LADARVision® System for wavefront-guided
treatment of farsightedness with and without astigmatism,
and for the treatment of eyes with other symptoms, such
as pre-existing night vision problems and post-LASEK
complications.
