Diabetes can affect
your eyes in many different ways. I have listed osome
problems and symptoms that you will need to watch for
if you are a diabetic.
1. Problem: sugar fluctuation
Symptoms: blurred vision that comes and goes (this
is reversible and does not damage the eye
2. Problem: nerve palsies
Symptoms: double vision
3. Problem: external changes
Symptoms: yellowish growth above upper lid or below
lower lid
(xanthelasma; this is a benign condition)
4. Problem: cataracts
Symptoms: gradually decreased vision, new ability
to read without reading
glasses, change in color vision, change in depth
perception, halos around
lights at night, glare from lights at night, double
vision, light sensitivity
5. Problem: hemorrhage inside the eye
Symptoms: floaters (may be large) blurred vision,
loss of central vision
(all may be sudden
6. Problem: leakage of fat-filled cells out of the
blood vessels and into the
retina
Symptoms: no immediate symptoms, but a gradual loss
of vision
7. Problem: areas of decreased blood flow in retina
Symptoms: no immediate symptoms, but a gradual loss
of vision
8. Problem: growth of new, abnormal blood vessels
Symptoms: no immediate symptoms, but a gradual loss
of vision
9. Problem: inflammation of optic nerve (optic neuritis)
Symptoms: sudden
vision loss, vision loss that comes and goes, decreased
depth perception, change in color vision, pain, loss
of central vision
10. Problem: deterioration of the optic nerve (optic
atrophy)
Symptoms: sudden vision loss
11. Problem: retinal vein occulusion
Symptoms: blurry
area or blurred vision (may be sudden)
Recommendations: See your medical doctor as scheduled.
Have your blood
pressure checked frequently. Be conscientious about
medications: sugar
control (including weight control and exercise) helps
minimize damage to
retina.
