When Dr. Johnny Gayton began using nutritional supplements in his practice, he faced a significant amount of criticism from the medical community. Dr. Gayton has had a way of being ahead of his time and once again, time has proven him correct. Archives of Ophthalmology recently published an article confirming that the use of potent antioxidants decreases the incidence of cataracts and delays the progression of macular degeneration. More and more studies are confirming the benefits of taking supplements for eye health, as well as, other health conditions.

Eyesight Associates now has a Nutrition Shoppe specializing in products that assist in the battle of chronic eye disease, or dry eye discomfort and support your overall health.

The Nutrition Shoppe orders products exclusively from companies that adhere to the most stringent
standards in supplement production. The quality of our supplements is what you would expect from a doctor's office. Our certified nutritional consultant is available to help guide you in your endeavor to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Women on Estrogen Replacement Therapy Have More Risk For Dry Eye Syndrome

In the years following menopause, women on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are at a significantly high risk of dry eye syndrome, according to researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Of the 25,000 post menopausal women surveyed for the November 7 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, women on estrogen therapy alone had a 69% greater risk for dry eye syndrome compared to women who had never used HRT.

The longer the postmenopausal woman is on HRT, the greater her risk of developing dry eyes. For every three-year interval of HRT, dry eye syndrome risk is increased by 15%.

To put it in perspective, nearly 38% of postmenopausal women in the United States use HRT. The relationship between estrogen use and dry eye syndrome is still undetermined. Make sure you tell your eye doctor if you are using HRT or any other medications. Please be aware that 50% of patients having Lasik develop at least a temporary dry eye. If you are on HRT this risk is even higher.
